Kharar is one of the three tehsils, with Mohali and Dera Bassi, that formed Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar district in 2006, and the district administration lists it among the district’s important townships. It lies 10 km by road from Mohali, and it is one of the six Local Planning Areas in GMADA’s Greater Mohali Region.
The town has grown quickly. The Kharar Municipal Council area had 42,289 residents in 2001 and 74,460 in 2011, and Kharar tehsil counted 3,29,763 people, just over half of them in rural areas. Kharar block, with 138 villages, is the district’s largest administrative unit.
Kharar is on NH 5 between Ludhiana and Mohali, NH 205 starts here for Ropar and Kiratpur Sahib, and NH 205A runs 40 km through Banur to Tepla. NHAI’s flyover and elevated road from Balongi to the Khanpur T-point carries traffic between Mohali and Kharar. Chandigarh University’s main campus at Gharuan, and colleges at Landran, Jhanjheri, Sahauran and Tangori, bring students and staff to the area. VR Punjab Mall, formerly North Country Mall, is in Kharar too. The town’s PIN code is 140301, and vehicles registered here carry the PB-27 code.

What to know before you move in Kharar
The flyover, the Kharar-Landran road and a few busy junctions shape how a Kharar move is planned. We look at each during the survey.
Kharar-Landran road after rain
After rain in August 2025, the 100 m between the gates of Gillco Valley (Sector 127) and Gillco Palms (Sector 115) took 15 to 20 minutes to drive, and in September the deputy commissioner ordered NHAI to repair the road after its drain overflowed. For homes on this road, we avoid moving straight after heavy rain.
The Mohali-Kharar flyover
The NHAI road from the Balongi light point to the Khanpur T-point mixes elevated and surface sections, with flyovers from Balongi to Sunny Enclave and from the BSNL building to Khanpur. The speed limit is 40 km/h. For Sunny Enclave and Khanpur addresses, we plan where the truck comes down to the surface road.
Accident black spots
SAS Nagar Police list the Kharar bus stand, the front of Kharar hospital, the Khanpur and Desu Majra turns, the Sante Majra and Jhanjheri bus stops and the Sahauran turn among the district’s black spots. We avoid parking or turning a loaded truck at these points.
Village homes
Kharar block, the district’s largest administrative unit, has 138 villages, and just over half of Kharar tehsil’s people live in rural areas. For a village house we check the approach at the survey, and if the lane is tight for a big truck we use a smaller vehicle for the last stretch.
The road to Ropar and Himachal
NH 205 begins at Kharar and runs 183 km through Ropar and Kiratpur Sahib to Swarghat; its Kharar-Swarghat section was formerly NH 21. Moves to Ropar, Kiratpur Sahib and on into Himachal can leave Kharar directly on this highway.

03.Does the Kharar-Landran road flood in the monsoon?
Parts of it have. After rain in August 2025, the stretch near Shivalik City was waterlogged and the 100 m between the Gillco Valley and Gillco Palms gates took 15 to 20 minutes to cross. In September 2025 the deputy commissioner told NHAI to repair it. We check the road before a monsoon move and keep a back-up slot.
